Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania; more than 100,000 donkeys have been toiling here in the most undignified conditions for as long as anyone can remember. Almost the entire economy runs on the backs of grey donkeys. According to a conservative estimate, more than 40,000 donkeys perform their always unrewarded service to humans for water transport alone - only a few households in Nouakchott are supplied with piped water.
